Levitation were formed by Terry Bickers and David Francolini in 1990 after Bickers left The House of Love. They recruited Christian (Bic) Hayes and Robert White from Ring (Hayes was playing with Cardiacs at the time) and Laurence O'Keefe from The Jazz Butcher. The band recorded several EPs for Ultimate Records, some of which were compiled with live tracks for the album Coterie in 1991, before signing to Rough Trade for their debut album proper, Need for Not in 1992. Not long after this, Rough Trade collapsed and Levitation signed to Chrysalis in the UK.
This was when they hit a creative peak, recording enough material for two whole albums, tentatively entitled Meanwhile Gardens - Summer and Autumn. On these albums, the creativity of the whole band coalesced. Levitation as a band were truly greater than the sum of their parts but this turbulent energy overflowed. After refusing to tour America, Bickers walked off stage at the Tufnell Park Dome in 1993 and left the band. Without their 'man who stood in the middle', the remaining members shelved Meanwhile Gardens and sought a replacement. Eventually Steve Ludwin from Some Have Fins took over vocal duties, but the magic had been lost. A version of Meanwhile Gardens was released in Australia in 1994 with Ludwin's vocals replacing Bickers', but shortly thereafter the band split for good.
Versions of the tracks from Meanwhile Gardens with Bickers' original vocals circulated on the internet for years and a facebook page was created to press for an official release.
Flashback Records is proud to announce that finally these tracks are to be released. The original band members have agreed a track listing for the definitive Meanwhile Gardens which will be released as a double vinyl and single CD on 23rd October 2015. Three tracks from those sessions not included on the album are available here as a vinyl only 12" single released on Record Store Day 2015. The album been remastered from the original analogue tapes and new sleeve designs have been comissioned from Cally at antar who oversaw much of the original Levitation artwork.
