  • Rock Buyer vacancy!

    Posted on 2013/05/15 by Ossie

    wish-you-were-here

Flashback is hiring an experienced Rock Vinyl Buyer to join our Essex Road squadron.

The vacancy is currently for three days a week, Thursday to Saturday, though there may be scope for expanding the role in the future. Hours are 10am to 7pm with a one hour lunch break and you could start as soon as possible.

We're looking for someone with plenty of experience buying and selling vinyl, specifically in a shop. Someone who knows their prices for Rock, Punk, Folk, Metal, Indie and Pop. I'm afraid it's not enough to just know a lot about music, we really do need someone with experience of buying the stuff in, grading it, processing it and pricing it. We use a database for cataloging our stock, so decent typing and computer skills are also a must.

Flashback is a great record shop to work in. I've been here nearly eight years now and I'm pretty fussy about workplaces. We get top vinyl in all the time and we've got a swell bunch of staff here. We work hard to get a lot of records out and we're pretty damn serious. Occasionally we also have a laugh. Occasionally.

If you think you're the one for us, please send a CV and cover letter to ossie@flashback.co.uk or drop them into the shop if you're into paper and walking.

  • Record Store Day 2012

    Posted on 2012/04/20 by Ossie

    It's RECORD STORE DAY!!!

The Queen's Official Birthday of record shop days.
The only day of the year when people still queue for records.

Below is a list of everything we have received from our dear distributing friends as of 20:46 on Friday the 20th April 2012. We may well get a few more bits in the morning. We have outstanding orders.

If you're planning to be out standing in the rain tomorrow morning outside our Crouch End shop then they should have most of this list too but a couple of things, which we only received one of, will only be in the big mummyshop in Essex Road.

Don't forget our Stackridge instore at Crouch End at 2pm and Essex Road's Fair Ohs instore at 7pm. By seven we ought to be dead on our feet and needing a beer. So that's what we'll have.

Without further ado, here is the list...

  • Priciest sellers of 2011

    Posted on 2012/01/06 by Ossie

It seems easier than ever to sell expensive records. I think those of us who spend money on rotating-disc-music are inherently impervious to the gloomy practicalities of a recession. It never made economic sense to buy expensive records. It was just good, and it is still good.

With that said we weren't inundated with £800 Beatles albums as we were in 2010. The top ten most expensive records that we sold in 2011 are either first pressings of classic albums that went on to sell millions, or shockingly obscure genre records that probably failed to sell at all. • Music Takes Me Up: Blue Lines

    Posted on 2011/04/08 by Ossie

Just up the road from our Essex Road store is The Winchester. It's a pub that likes it's music, open late, with DJs three or four nights a week.

Anyway... the music takes me up gang are starting a listening club there. It's kicking off with Massive Attack's debut LP Blue Lines on Sunday the 17th of April. The needle will hit the wax at 8pm sharp. It's the first in an ongoing series, playing classic albums, uninterrupted, in full, from vinyl for YOUR deep listening pleasure. Being deep vinyl listeners ourselves we think it's a great idea.
They'll be giving away a Flashback voucher or something exciting like that and it's the day after Record Store Day so it makes it an all-vinyl-funtime-weekend.

How can you have a day without a night?

  • The State of the Nation

    Posted on 2011/02/18 by Mark

What's going on with record shops - are they a thing of the past, an antiques mart or are they vibrant and current?

    Well.

Our experience at Flashback is very positive about the state of things.

It seems that vinyl is undergoing a resurgence in popularity. It's not just old fogeys trying to recreate their vinyl collection from yesteryear, which they flogged/ gave away/ left at an old girlfriend/ boyfriends. The people who buy vinyl from Flashback fall into several categories:
