  • Soul/Jazz et al Buyer Vacancy!

    Posted on 2013/07/16 by Matthew

Do you know your RVG from your OJC?

Flashback is looking to hire a soul/jazz/dance/hip hop etc. buyer to fill a position at our Essex Road store.

It is a full time vacancy for Tuesday-Saturday 10am to 7pm with an hour lunch break.

Ideal candidates will have an extensive knowledge of vinyl from the requisite genres and be able to identify, value, grade and price it all. Additional knowledge of other genres is welcome and previous record shop experience is essential. We use a database for cataloguing our stock so good computer skills are also required.

Flashback is a great place to work. We have knowledgable and helpful staff and are looking for someone who will fit into our team seamlessly.

If you think you fit the role then please email a CV and cover letter to matt@flashback.co.uk or drop into either of our shops.

  • Thalia Zedek Instore

    Posted on 2013/06/11 by Linda

    Thalia Zedek

We are super excited to have Thalia Zedek playing an instore in our Essex Road shop this Friday, June 14th.

You know where it is, from 7pm, and it's totally FREE! There will be the usual refreshments provided.

"Thalia Zedek might be entering the fourth decade of her career as one of the most singular voices in rock, but she shows no signs of creative fatigue. Throughout the 80s she rose to prominence fronting Uzi and Live Skull, before founding Come with Chris Brokaw of Codeine in 1990.

On 'Via', the new album, Zedek presents a collection of songs that range from the harrowing to the heartfelt. Via has a gravitational field, a magnetic pull brought on by the weight of the words and the mass of the sounds created. Regardless of her status as a pioneering woman in independent rock, Thalia Zedek’s music stands on its own in its startling honesty."

  • Rock Buyer vacancy!

    Posted on 2013/05/15 by Ossie

Flashback is hiring an experienced Rock Vinyl Buyer to join our Essex Road squadron.

The vacancy is currently for three days a week, Thursday to Saturday, though there may be scope for expanding the role in the future. Hours are 10am to 7pm with a one hour lunch break and you could start as soon as possible.

We're looking for someone with plenty of experience buying and selling vinyl, specifically in a shop. Someone who knows their prices for Rock, Punk, Folk, Metal, Indie and Pop. I'm afraid it's not enough to just know a lot about music, we really do need someone with experience of buying the stuff in, grading it, processing it and pricing it. We use a database for cataloging our stock, so decent typing and computer skills are also a must.

Flashback is a great record shop to work in. I've been here nearly eight years now and I'm pretty fussy about workplaces. We get top vinyl in all the time and we've got a swell bunch of staff here. We work hard to get a lot of records out and we're pretty damn serious. Occasionally we also have a laugh. Occasionally.

If you think you're the one for us, please send a CV and cover letter to ossie@flashback.co.uk or drop them into the shop if you're into paper and walking.

  • Record Store Day 2013

    Posted on 2013/04/19 by Mark

    Record Store Day

Tomorrow, Saturday the 20th of April is Record Store Day 2013.

Not only will we have FREE BISCUITS as in previous years but we'll also have FREE BADGES and GUEST DEEJAYS to edutain whilst you get your browz on.

Yes indeed, we've a crack team of vinyl junkies assembled to (metaphorically) whistle while we work. Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne and music enthusiasm fame, will be kicking things off at 12 noon. He'll hand over to magnetic tape archeologist, Jonny Trunk of Trunk label fame, at 1pm. After that, around half two, we'll have former Rocker in Chief of the Times and general General of music journalism, Pete Paphides. He might be playing records exclusively sourced from our pound bin. Not sure. Next up on the Murphy Meteor (pictured below) is Liam Large of the Jukebox Jam night and record label. To finish things off, when the staff are on their last legs, we'll let one of them, Duke Murphy no less, play some of his own records.

    The Murphy Meteor

Oh, the EXCLUSIVE RELEASES? Yeah, we've got somes of those...

Here's the full list of what we have received. We'll have all of it in our Essex Road shop and very much almost all of it in our Crouch End store, only missing the things we got a paltry 1 of (They're mostly pretty niche).

    10am opening.

    Without further ado.

  • Women Make Noise - instore book reading!

    Posted on 2013/03/23 by Ossie

"Women Make Noise : Girl Bands From Motown To Modern" is an amazing new book edited by Julia Downes that excavates the hidden legacies of all-girl bands.

We are pleased to host an event here at Flashback Records at which three of the authors, Victoria Yeulet, Rhian Jones, and Bryony Beynon will read chapters.

    from 7pm - 9pm on FRIDAY 29th MARCH

This is a FREE event open to all.

There will be refreshment, alcoholic & non-alcholic & free.

Between the readings there will be a all-girl music playlist and of course we will keep the shop open for business or non-business.

Really excited for this event (a little different to our normal in-store performances) at which you might find some inspiration or some questions to raise - I'm sure the authors will encourage discussion.

    Flashback, 50 Essex Road, London N1 8LR

After the event, our Murph will be round The Mucky Pup (Queen's Head St) playing all-girl-band-vinyl for the rest of the night. SWELL.

Follow us on twitter @flashbacklondon to keep up to date with our events and all things Flashback.

  • FAWN SPOTS Instore Friday 15th Feb 2013

    Posted on 2013/02/14 by Kev

Fawn Spots are from York. Matt who works here, he loves York. He's even gone to watch York City play football. He likes the ales.

Fawn Spots, like Matt, the football & the ales, are brilliant.

And so we are lucky to have them make the trip down south to play for us in-store on Friday 15th Feb, around 7pm. Completely free, as always. Gratis booze and non-booze provided by us.

Listen to a stream of Fawn Spots split LP with Oakland, California's charmingly monikered Cumstain here at Loud & Quiet: http://www.loudandquiet.com/2013/02/stream-the-new-split-lp-from-fawn-spots-and-cumstain/

We will have copies of the new LP available on the night.

And boy do we have a lot of QUALITY stock in the shop at the moment.

    Come all!
